Ready for a bit of fun?
How are your reasoning powers? Your ability to take a puzzle and see the answer without getting bogged down or ‘bejuggled’ by all the details?
Cate from over at Infinite Sadness… or what? and I have recently been discussing how living with depression is sometimes referred to as ‘living with a black dog’. (Which I personally think very unfair to black dogs.
Recently I have been going through a depressive crash and have paralleled it to walking in thick woods – you can find my piece on that here – ‘Dark Thoughts and Dealing With Them‘
Why am I telling you all this? Well because these two things put me in mind of a puzzle and I thought I would share it with you…
A farm house sits on a plot of land which is 200 meters square and surrounded by a wall.
Actually the farmhouse is 10 meters from the back wall and some 150 meters from the front wall and gate.
Tied to the farmhouse by a piece of rope some 300 meters in length is a black dog.
At the front of the land there is a 10 meter wide river over which there is a small bridge.
Across the bridge and only 1 meter away from the bridge is a wooded area come forest which is 200 meters square.
If the dog does not break free from the rope and there are no obstacle in its way, how far into the wood can the dog go?
(Please note that the above picture whilst pretty much to scale is not exactly to scale and is only a guide)
That is your challenge! Is it as complicated or as simple as it may at first seem? Is it indeed a trick question? Well you will just have to work that out for yourself (but then isn’t that all part of the fun?) Is this some random quiz that I suddenly vaguely remembered and have decided to throw out there?
Well we will see. But I really would appreciate your thinking through the puzzle and trying to come up with an answer.

another great post..You my friend have been nominated.

Hi Stuff,
Thank you that is incredibly kind of you. I will pop over and check it out now.
Kind Regards and God bless you.
Kevin.
150 plus10 plus 1 equals 161. 300 minus 161 equals 139 meters into the woods. I did, however, just wake up. Plus, I have no idea of meters. We don’t do meters here in Texas!!
HA!! I’m probably WAY off, but I don’t care. It was nice to puzzle my brain after a good, albeit interrupted, night’s sleep!!
Thanks for the challenge, Kevin!!
Kathy
Hi Kathy.
Many thanks for taking up the challenge and I am delighted to hear you had a good albeit interupted sleep.
Sorry about the meters thing Texas huh? Perhaps I should have used a puzzle involving gallons of oil instead lol.
(Actually in terms of the question the units of measurement used, providing they are consistant, are irrelevant to the answer.)
Was your answer right? Hm now that really would be telling and I am feeling particularly impish today so I am not going to say until others have had a chance to try.
Kind Regards and God bless you.
Kevin
I love the “gallons of oil instead”!!! HA!!
I was teasing because I know it’s all about the numbers not meters/feet/yards/gallons of oil/whatever!!
I just had to tease you about it!!
All right, you little imp, you, I’ll wait for others to answer!!
Take care and had a blessed day/evening/night!!
Kathy
300 metres the length of the rope.
Oh Interesting answer.
But I am still not telling which is right.
Hope you got my email.
Kind Regards and God bless you.
Kevin
Course it is
Even if it is not the answer that you believe to be correct it definately isn’t wrong!
Just replying to you now.
Ps is it just me being moderated? If so I promise not to put anything else frantic n again.
Hi Baldrick
Nope, I promise it isn’t just you being moderated. Actually every comment (other than mine of course) is moderated before it is published.
I had some very nasty and not pleasant comments when I first started blogging. Nothing specifically personal just somewhat disturbing and which were extremely offensive to me and which would have been offensive to my readers.
Aditionally you sometimes get comments from folk who just want to cuss and use bad language and annoy and I am very old fashioned when it comes to bad language and the need to show respect to people so I decided that all comments needing approval was the way to go.
So it really isn’t you, it is just me being very cautious and not wanting anyone to be offended.
Kind Regards and God bless you.
Kevin,
Pps should read graphic not frantic. No idea what happened there
Hmmm, at first I wanted to say the dog could get 59 meters into the woods, while tied to the front of the house, but then I realized that the dimensions of the house aren’t given. So, I think this is a trick question lol. Seriously, though… and I’m probably reading way too much into this… I’m looking at this whole example as a reflection of how deep into depression we can get. The house’s dimensions are not given, and the dog could be tied to the front, back, or sides. The house’s size, in actuality, does not matter because the distance the dog can reach will always vary, depending on where he is tied. So, some days, he will go deeper into those woods of dark depression, and sometimes, he won’t make it quite so deep.
Like I said, I’m probably reading way too into this, but I kind of wonder if that was your point with this exercise to begin with. Awesome and fun one for sure, and definitely thought-provoking.
Hi Summer
I love the way your mind works lol!
You are right in what you say that the dimensions of the house are not specifically given. BUT there are able to be roughly calculated from the other information given.
The plot of land is 200 square meters and the house is 10 meters from the back wall and some 150 meters from the front wall and gate thus we can safely estimate the hgouse as being some 40 meters from front to back.
You are also right that the do could be tied to fhe front back or side of the house. Actually, if it helps at all, I can tell you the the dog is tied to the front of the house.
As for anything else well I am still feeling impish so I am just not going to give any more information than that and I am not promising that even my having given that information will be of any help. LOL
But as I said I do so love the way your mind works
Kind Regards and God bless you.
Kevin.
Lol, thank you!
I’m going to head back to the drawing/calculation board.
Hi Summer.
I promise all will be revealed.
Kind Regards and God bless you.
Kevin
Don’t do this to me!
I can’t cope with maths so I’m not even going to try. If I was the black dog, I’d chew through the rope and make a run for it, as far as he wanted to go. This has proven one thing to me and that is that there is nothing wrong with your brain. It’s working just fine. As for mine… well all I can say is that I still think you lot are to blame for the poor black dog.
LOL Sorry Cate,
But I did say I was feeling impish LOL
Kind Regards and God bless.
Kevin.
LOL. True. Very true. And you did well but you got me on one of my weak points.
Hope you have a good day!
