Bipolar Disorder and Sleep Patterns – New Poll.

Ok here is something different and please understand that this is new to me and so I am still muddling my way through it all – so please bear with me.

As a result of my own experiences, an article I read recently and a subsequent post that I published here on Voices of Glass, the whole question of sleep patterns within people who suffer from Bipolar Disorder has started to really interest me.

So in response to this I thought I would draw up a little poll or three and invite folk to share their own experiences.

I really hope you enjoy doing this and that I haven’t messed up the design of it.

Below you will find three very short polls.  All you have to do is choose one answer that is most accurate for you personally in each of the three sections.

Due to the way the polls are set up (or at least my very limited understanding of how they are set up) I have had to keep them fairly basic.  So if you are on mediation that affects the answers to the following questions please answer as if you were not taking medication.

Thank you for doing that poll, now please choose one from the following…

And finally this one…

I am so very grateful to you for completing these short polls.  I will be covering their results in a later post but I think I have enabled you to see the percentage results yourself.

If you run a mental health blog yourself, I wonder if you would please consider covering or reblogging this post and placing a link to it on your blog so that we can increase the potential numbers of folk participating?

Many thanks I really do appreciate it.

    Hi Colonial Punk,

I think anyone who votes will be able to see the results but yes I am planning to publish a post on the results and to open it up for discussion.

Please know that I do understand and indeed can personally relate to your comments about the stark differences between the depressed and manic states. The difficulty in creating the poll was firstly the fact that the set up limitations (and I stress that I am new to them) seemed to mean that the poll has to be basic by design. (Hence the three different sections.) And secondly that I didn’t want to shape the possible answers given and couldn’t find a way of accommodating those differences without pre-shaping people’s answers.

But please do accept my apologies for that and if it is indeed my fault due to my newness to designing them, my apologies for not having found a better way.

    Kind Regards

    Kevin

  11. There you go, Kevin!.

Candida, I’m very interested in the research you are doing…would you be willing to share as well?

    January 24, 2012 at 8:23 pm

  12. I’ll be interested to check back and see what kind of results you get, or are you planning on writing a post specifically with the conclusions of these polls? Either way, I’m curious!

The trouble for me is that things are so starkly different when I am depressed vs. manic. For example, if I am depressed, I never feel rested after sleep, and if I am manic I pretty much always do. It can be hard to find an “average” for a poll when I spend so much time bouncing around between extremes!

    Hi Candida,

Many thanks for getting in touch.

Yes absolutely I would be willing to share the results with you. Actually I am going to make the results in terms of figures/percentages fully known to everyone whilst keeping individual participants’ names and answers confidential.

At the moment the response has been a little limited but I am hopeful for a larger response once folk get to hear about it.

Again good to hear from you. I hope the entry you are writing in successful.
    Kind Regards

    Kevin.

  14. I’m looking into the research on how lack of sleep can potentially precipitate a manic episode, both for an entry I’m writing and for a couple of patients. Your poll is intriguing–might you be willing to share some of your results, if you have the time?

Hi TD, (I hope you don’t mind me calling you that)

Again any friend of Lulu’s is more than welcome here.

So sorry to hear about your stroke. As someone who is morbidly obese and who has heart troubles myself, a stroke etc are a constant concern of mine.

Really good to meet you and thanks for taking time to pop over and do the polls.
    Kind Regards.

    Hi Shelly,

Really nice to meet you, any friend of lulu is always welcome here. Thank you for taking time to do the polls and to comment.

I did consider the question of medication and other things as well but ran into difficulties with how the polls seem (I am very new to them so I may have misunderstood) to need to be set up and so decided to keep it fairly basic.

But you do raise a point that I should perhaps cover in the post.
Again great to hear from you.

    Kind Regards
    Kevin.

  17. A question that could have been included is if medication is used to get and stay asleep. If it weren’t for Trazodone and melatonin, I’d have trouble with insomnia and middle insomnia most every night. I’m a friend of Lulu’s…thanks for the article!
